Ice Skating
In the winter you can ice skate on one of the natural skating rinks in each of the villages. The ice skating rink in Lofer is only 75 meters from our house. If the conditions permit then the parking area of the local swimming pool is prepared for this purpose. At night the ice is lit so you can also fully enjoy the ice skating in the evening. Naturally you can also hire ice skates at the location.
Toboggan (Sledding)
Toboggan is perhaps the one of the most amusing ways to have fun in the winter. In all four of the villages you will find numerous toboggan runs.
In many sports and rental shops, you can hire a sled. For the smaller children, you can hire a sled with a child’s seat. In several different places you can toboggan at night.
Each Tuesday and Thursday evening in Maria Kirchental the toboggan run is open from 20.00pm and is lit with torches. This run is over 2.1 km long and you can hire a sled there.

At 'Knappenstadl' restaurant in Lofer, you can have guaranteed fun at the lighted 1.5 km natural toboggan run. Another exceptional experience you can witness is the feeding of wild deer in the area.
You can use the toboggan run from 10.00 am and until the restaurant closes. The restaurant is accessible by car or taxi and is on Thursday’s is closed.
Curling
| In the evening after skiing you can take a look at the curling. If you want have a turn the local inhabitants of Lofer are more than pleased to have you join in. The larger the group, the better it is. You can also try it out with only two people. The AA of Lofer regularly organizes small tournaments which you can also enter. Usually these meetings end in a one of the bars. | ![]() |
Winter walking
A good alternative for intensive skiing or snowboarding is winter walking. In the Salzburger Saalach valley, you can find many cleared winter walking paths. Along the walking paths lie restaurants and or hostels, where you can enjoy a cup of coffee or one of the specialties. Families with small children can rent a sled in one of the sports stores.

Winter walking is really for the whole family. The torch walking tours in the winter are an unforgettable experience. Participate in one of the torch guided winter walks and take in the breathtaking surroundings after sunset. The winter walk paths on the Loferer Alm, lead you to a height of 1,400 meters through the beautiful mountain landscape. Next to the cross country tracks, you will also find walking paths. There are various inviting restaurants in case you want to have a rest or just enjoy the sun.
If you want to walk next to the cleared walking paths, just put on snowshoes and go snowshoe walking.

This is not just a sporting activity, but it brings together sport and nature. And is accessible to everybody. Our ancestors used snowshoes to reach mountain huts or animal feeding areas. There are lots of snowshoe walking tours but you can only participate in these with the accompaniment of a guide. |
